Pet Sitting

August 25th, 2008

Pet sitting is the business of looking after a pet while the pet owner is away. This business of pet sitting is a wonderful way to earn money especially for those people who loves pets.

Added service a pet sitter could provide is the security of the home while the owner is away. They could put on and put off lights, collect mails and newspapers, water the plants in the garden. They could provide many other services.

Though the service basically handles pets, but you should be able handle people well. After all, you will have to interact with other people, including the pet owner, to carry out your service efficiently. Therefore, a few points should always be kept in mind by a pet sitter to be successful in the business.

Before starting your pet sitting business, you should make a little planning. You will have to fix up the timings for pet sitting. This timing should include the time you would take to travel from your home and back. This will give you an idea how you could market your services.

Next important point is how much you should charge for such a service provided by you. For this, you will have to find out how much other persons in your neighborhood are charging for similar service. You could contact local kennels to get an idea. You should also keep in mind how far you could travel to provide service. Because, travelling cost would increase if you would offer your services at far places.

Many pet sitters ask for more payment during holidays. You may consider whether you should also do like that. Pet sitters are in great demand during the holidays so much so that many of them are reserved months in advance. To tide over such a busy period, you could even think of taking the help of an assistant. But, before doing so, you should take the approval of the pet owner and introduce your assistant to your pet to make him familiar to them.

As your business grows up, you could decide how many hours you would like to work daily, weekly or monthly for your business.

Another important decision you will have take is regarding the kind of pets you would like to handle. Some people would like to handle small dogs and cats because it requires lesser efforts to handle them. Others would not mind handling all kinds of pets like horses, birds, fish etc. The choice would be entirely yours.

If would be a great idea if you could provide the pet owner with a daily log of activities you have carried with pets. That will show your sincerity in providing your service.

Therefore, for any animal lover who could spend some of their time with pets, they could also think of taking up the business of pet sitting as a way of earning money.

August 22nd, 2008

Sanitation and hygiene  are must, especially with a pet at home. The first thing the pet owner has to do is fix up a time and stick to that time  for bathing the pet. Follow the following steps towards giving a good bath to your dog.

  • Preparation : Start at least 15 minutes before the scheduled bath time. All things needed such as the towels, basin , dog shampoo, hose , ear-cleaners should be kept close and reachable when needed . Don’t keep them in a place where they can be kicked and splashed.
  • Fetch the Dog and chain it properly so that while taking bath it does not create a mess around.
  • Brushing : Animals lover pampering. Brush the dog’s coat and inspect for any abnormalities such as fleas. This should be done prior to giving the bath. This brushing can help the dog to relax and on the other hand show that it is being loved by the owner.
  • Reason for scratching: Close inspection will reveal the reason for scratching. The scratching could be t because of allergy, parasites or simple skin irritation. After finding the reason for scratching find an appropriate shampoo that can help the dog get rid of that uncomfortable feeling. Some shampoos are specially formulated to counter the causes of irritation. The size of the tub, temperature of the water and the type of shampoo used differ from breed to breed, from season to season and from fur to fur. The best way to reduce general irritation is the rinsing of the dog.
  • The coat of the dog should be first made wet and nice and then shampoo has to be applied to it. There is a method of bathing the dog. Bathing has to start with the back, then down to its tail and below, his rear legs, belly , chest, and ultimately its neck. All the creases and rolls should be shampooed and later rinsed thoroughly.
  • The last part of the body of the dog to be washed is the head and face. Select a soap or shampoo that does not burn the eyes of the dog.
  • Rinse the dog thoroughly till the water that comes from the fur is clear. If the dog makes a fuss at rinsing the face use your hand to splash water on its face.

Drying  : The towel should be first put over the back of the dog. The back should be rubbed dry. The inside of the ears should be made dry too.

Pet’s Entertainment

August 19th, 2008

Entertainment has its own importance in the life of a living being. This is equally applicable to the animals and the human beings. Most of the people  have got a wrong misconception that a animal does not need any entertainment. It is obvious that if you keep restrictions on the movement of your pet,  it may  affect the psychology of the pet and it may get irritated or even at times violent. The animal needs entertainment not only to remain active but also to remain physically fit.

Entertainment for pets are usually of two types one is indoor and the other is outdoor. The best entertainment for dogs is taking them out for a walk.  When you take the dog out on  the street be sure it is not bitten by any other stray dog.

A dog or a cat  usually likes to free and be active.  Usually they like to chew the bones or the plastic which resemble the bone. At times they will toss this bone or its duplicate into the air. The toys or products for chewing are made of different material such as woven fabrics, rope, rubber or rawhide. It could be dangerous if the pet swallows the chew toy  or product. So never leave the pet unattended when it is playing with it . It is a good idea  to  chain the other end of the  chewing material so  even if the pet tries to swallow it cannot do so. Some chewing material have a tasteful coating on it while others are impregnated with  the food matter.

Dogs and cats usually like to chase thing and love running after a ball or anything . Some dogs like to catch the flying discs or saucers made of plastic.

The pet animals usually like to scratch their nail with the ground.  A used door mat would serve the purpose of this activity.

If you have two cats  or two dogs don’t be surprised to see the two fight over a dummy bone or a tattered rag of cloth or a piece of mat.

The best piece of entertainment  for the pet animals is the ball that is suspended in the middle of the room by a long strong string. You will love to see the pet jumping to catch the ball.

For birds small houses are kept in the cage. These small houses have a different entrance and exit.

In the aquarium there are false trees, branches, leaves, logs of wood, tunnels  to make the environment in the aquarium as natural as possible.

Nowadays music and videos are also used to entertain the animals.
